Prepare the data storage location

Mediasite Video Platform stores Mediasite data (configuration files, image files, temporary files required for multicast, image and closed-captioning files associated with presentations, etc.) in the data storage location that you specify when configuring your site. You will create the data storage location before you install the software and specify it when you configure a site.

Mediasite data can be stored locally on the machine where Mediasite Video Platform software is installed or on a network share on a different machine. When data is stored locally, it is referred to as a local data storage location. When data is stored on a separate machine, this is referred to as a remote data storage location. Remote data storage locations are required when deploying Mediasite Video Platform in a high-availability environment because all servers point to a common data source.

You can store and retrieve data in this location using file share (secure HTTP), FTP, or SFTP. The items you must create depend on how you have chosen to configure your data storage locations.

To prepare the data storage location, only do the steps that apply:

If you want to store Mediasite data on Mediasite Video Platform (as a local data storage location), create a folder where the data will be stored. Then create a local user and give it read and write permissions to the folder.

If you want to use a separate server to store the Mediasite data (as a remote data storage location), create a network share and a user account that will be used by Mediasite Video Platform to access the share.  The user should have read and write permissions for the share. Write down the path of the network share. Remote data storage locations are required in high-availability installations.

It is important to run Configuration Editor and configure Mediasite as a user with read and write access to the network share to ensure you have full access to it. Otherwise, you will have to specify the credentials of a user with these privileges.

Give the NETWORK SERVICE user full access to the data storage location (local or remote) to ensure that the web applications have full access to it.

(Optional). If you want to use FTP or SFTP to access the data storage locations, create a virtual directory that points to the data storage location. Take note of the virtual directory URL because you will need it later when you configure Mediasite using Management Portal. You will all specify the credentials of the user with read and write permissions to the data storage location.

It is helpful to use names for the items above that will help you to remember their purpose. For example, “MediasiteNetworkUser” as the name of the network user when using a remote data storage location.

When using a local data storage location, make sure that your machine meets or exceeds the storage requirements specified in System requirements.
